💡 Container vs Codec — What's the Difference?

A container (MP4, MKV, AVI) is the "box" that holds the data. A codec (H.264, H.265, AV1) is the compression algorithm that encodes/decodes the video stream inside. Think of a container as a lunchbox and the codec as the recipe used to prepare the food inside.

A Brief History of Video

1888

Roundhay Garden Scene

The oldest surviving motion picture. Filmed by Louis Le Prince in Leeds, England — it lasts just 2.11 seconds and shows people walking in a garden. Le Prince mysteriously vanished two years later on a train.

1956

First Video Tape Recorder

Ampex's VRX-1000 cost $50,000 and used 2-inch reels spinning at 15,000 RPM. CBS broadcast the first pre-recorded TV show using it. A single reel held just 90 minutes and weighed 30 pounds.

1976

VHS vs Betamax

JVC's VHS launched against Sony's Betamax in one of tech's most famous format wars. Betamax had better picture quality but VHS offered longer recording time (2 hours vs 1 hour). VHS won through licensing to more manufacturers.

1995

DVD Arrives

The DVD delivered 480p video with 4.7 GB capacity — 7× more than a CD. Unlike VHS/Betamax, competing companies (Sony, Philips, Toshiba, Panasonic) agreed on a single standard. The first DVD player cost $1,000.

2005

YouTube Launches

The first video uploaded was "Me at the zoo" — 18 seconds of co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo. Today YouTube hosts over 800 million videos and delivers over 1 billion hours of watch time daily.

2018

AV1 Released

The Alliance for Open Media (Google, Mozilla, Cisco, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft) released AV1 as a royalty-free codec to break the patent stranglehold of H.265/HEVC. It's 30% more efficient than VP9.
