About Image Formats

PNG (1996) — lossless compression, supports transparency. Created as a patent-free alternative to GIF. Ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots.

JPEG (1992) — lossy compression developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. Revolutionised digital photography by making photos shareable over slow internet. Still the most widely used photo format.

WebP (2010) — created by Google, offers 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality. Supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency. Adopted by all modern browsers since 2020.

SVG (1999) — vector format using XML. Infinitely scalable without quality loss. Used for icons, logos, and illustrations on the web.

Fun Facts

• The first digital photograph was taken in 1957 by Russell Kirsch — a 176×176 pixel image of his baby son
• JPEG was almost named "JFIF" (JPEG File Interchange Format) — thankfully the simpler name won
• PNG was invented because of a patent dispute over GIF's LZW compression algorithm in 1994
• WebP files are on average 26% smaller than PNG and 25-34% smaller than JPEG
• The world creates approximately 1.4 trillion photos per year (2024 estimate)
