Car manufacturers list power in different units depending on the market. Understanding HP and kW helps you compare vehicles from different countries and make informed decisions.

What Do They Actually Mean?

  • โ–ถ Horsepower (HP): Invented by James Watt to market steam engines. One HP is roughly the power output of a horse. Used in the US, UK, and Japan
  • โ–ถ Kilowatt (kW): The SI unit of power. Used in Europe, Australia, and most of the world. Also used for electric vehicles globally
  • โ–ถ PS (Pferdestรคrke): German metric horsepower, slightly different from imperial HP. 1 PS = 0.9863 HP

Electric Vehicles and kW

Electric vehicles have made kW more mainstream because:

  • โ–ถ Charging speed is measured in kW
  • โ–ถ Motor output is naturally measured in kW
  • โ–ถ It makes more sense to use the same unit family throughout

Power vs Torque

Power (HP/kW) is only half the story. Torque (Nm or lb-ft) determines how quickly a car accelerates from low speeds. A diesel truck might have more torque than a sports car despite having less horsepower.
